  • phoenix 2.2 calculating diaplcement window won`t close. max2012.

    hi,
i`ve just come across an issue creating a new phoenix sim for a smoke trail, adding a displacement map and when i render it max renders the image then (it`s not crashed) but a `phoenixfd operation` window won`t close `calculating displacement (level 2) pass 1`, even though the render has already finished. because the window won`t close i have to end process on 3dsmax and rerun it.
anyone come across this ? displacement is just a procedural noise map.

    thanks
    anthonyh

i`ve just tried the same in 2012 and 2016 and both have the displacement window that won`t close. you can click cancel but it does nothing.
it means i can`t use displacement which is a bit frustrating.
(just noticed my quality spelling of displacement in the title..woops)

ok, i`ve refined this bug to just surface driven displacement. it doesn`t seem to happen on vector or gradient, although gradient doesn`t seem to do anything and vector takes much longer to calculate. i`ve also tested geometry atmosphere and it`s the same, surface driven window won`t go away. although interestingly vector displacement is now much quicker.

something else i noticed is that with a large sim max in scene seems to run very sluggish. not while simulating but a precalc`d sim just loaded in scene. i`d expect it while moving the timeline but even once you have moved to a later frame for test rendering and stopped, max is very slow, just clicking through menus is delayed by several seconds. it gets progressively slower the further into the sim you go. is that normal ?

        Hey,

Couldn't reproduce the displacement issue so far, so thanks for the pointer! I remember there was such an issue quite a long ago and it was fixed - do you have nightly access? If not, you definitely should email the Support team and get one. The viewport lag is also taken care of.

        Cheers!

i do but i haven`t had a chance to try it yet. i`ll give it a go and let you know.
good to know about the lag. i`ll definitely try it now !
          thanks
